Hanwha Q Cells to build the world's largest flower-shaped floating solar power plant

Hanwha Q Cells announced on the 12th that it will build a 41MW (megawatt) floating solar power plant at Hapcheon Dam in Gyeongnam. It is the world's largest floating solar power plant installed on the dam.The Hapcheon Dam floating solar power plant produces electricity that about 60,000 people can use for domestic use annually. This is the amount left over by the population of Hapcheon-gun (44,434 people).

Hanwha Q CELLS won an order for power plant construction from Korea Water Resources Corporation in August, and the final development approval was completed on the 4th, and construction is expected to commence within this year. The floating solar power plant is a combination of onshore solar technology and floating structure technology, and is a form of constructing a solar power plant on a floating structure.Water solar power can efficiently utilize the land by using the water surface, which is an idle site, and has less shadow influence than land solar power. Here, there is a cooling effect of the module, so the power generation is 10% higher.

However, there are concerns about light pollution and the possibility of environmental destruction from environmental organizations.Accordingly, Hanwha Q CELLS plans to build a floating solar power plant with a design inspired by the plum, the military flower of Hapcheon-gun.An official from Hanwha Q CELLS said, “It is a plan that emphasizes the symbolism of Hapcheon-gun, the location of the power plant, and furthermore, it will be used as a renewable energy tour and tourist destination in the future.Hanwha Q Cells explains that the environmental stability of the Hapcheon Dam floating solar power plant has also been verified. As a result of monitoring conducted four times at the Hapcheon Lake Solar Power Demonstration Complex by the Korea Environmental Policy and Evaluation Institute, it was concluded that it is difficult to say that the solar power plant had a negative environmental impact.

Hanwha Q CELLS plans to install Q.PEAK DUO Poseidon, a module exclusively for water solar power, here. The Qpeak Duo Poseidon, produced with eco-friendly materials, was recognized for its safety by conducting exposure tests for more than 3,000 hours in an environment of 85 degrees Celsius and 85% relative humidity.Hee-cheol Kim, president of Hanwha Q Cells, said, “The floating solar power generation that generates eco-friendly electricity by using an idle land on the water is the best solution to utilize the limited land area.” I said.
